What is a REAL woman?

What is a REAL woman?

Recent events made me question the term “real” after I was attacked on social media for saying I was OK with being called plus size by Australian fashion standards, being the size 12 that I am. For the first time in my life I was skinny shamed because I am not plus size enough by some peoples standards. I was told the only thing plus size about me is my ego and because of this I shouldn’t be allowed to market a business that sells lingerie for curves.

This made me question Naked Curve as a brand, what we stand for and why we are here. First and foremost I would like to make it abundantly clear that we do not market ourselves as a plus-size brand, nor do we believe that “real” women have curves, or that you need to be a size 6 to be considered sexy and whatever other garbage we’ve been lead to believe at some point in our lives.

What we do believe is that your realness, womanhood or worth, cannot be defined by how visually appealing you are to another. We have spoken freely about women embracing their bodies and their sexuality beyond their size. We have encouraged women of all shapes and sizes to wear our pieces not just for partners, but foremostly, as a statement of self-love. We encourage women to love their bodies, embrace themselves and look after themselves. But is this enough?

Whether we like to admit it or not, we live in a world where we offend people left right and centre. Naked Curve comes under fire for not catering to smaller sizes, not catering to bigger sizes, encouraging eating disorders, encouraging obesity, not being appropriate for all age groups and honestly the list goes on. Even our models have been contacted and told they are too fat to model, let alone model lingerie. People literally email us to tell us how to run our business because we are failing to cater to all specific niche clientele.

We are 5 months in and I am putting my foot down! Enough is enough. I am fed up with women cutting each other off at the knees and being downright awful to one another from fat shaming to skinny shaming and everything in between. I won’t tolerate it and on top of it I will not apologise for what we’ve created because we are damn proud of what we have done and will continue to do.

Moving forward things are going to change. No longer will we just be lingerie for curves. We are more than that and we will be a force to be reckoned with. We have 3 core pillars we stand by:
1. Confidence
2. Community
3. Conscience

Confidence to us means being able to love the person you are, as you are or however you want to be. For us it means being unapologetically beautiful in your own damn way. This means breaking down standards, changing people’s perceptions and honestly only caring about what you have to say about yourself.

Community to us is being part of something bigger, it’s spreading the word of self-love and care so loudly that we cannot be ignored. We are growing and will continue to grow and we want everyone to join our movement. We want the next generation to not have to apologise or feel bad if they don’t fit a mould. You know what, let’s tear that mould to the ground and replace it with tolerance and acceptance of one another.

Conscience is where I get passionate. We have just made our 625th sale in month 5 and it’s not slowing down! Today I donated $625 and will continue to donate $1 from every sale on behalf of Naked Curve to Butterfly Foundation who are known for their work with people who suffer from Body Image Disorder, Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating Disorder, Disordered Eating and other specified eating and feeding disorders.

So ladies and gentleman, we are no longer just a lingerie brand. We are setting the record straight once and for all. We are a confident voice for those who struggle with their own. We are a community that will encourage you to love and accept one another, and a brand with a moral compass that is pointed in the right direction.

Watch this space… We aren’t going anywhere.

Big Love,
N.C.
